| MAY 5th Masters and Grand Masters - RACE 1
11 am in the morning. All crews go to the sea. With wind conditions from 9 to 10 knots of speed and under a clowdy sky the frist race begins. Masters & Grand Masters are competing. The regatta course is 1G. In the Committee Boat, the Principal Race Officer hoists the start flag. The battle begins. Waves of 3 feet in the Caribbean sea but the wind is still weak. We are waiting the same conditions for the regatta that will begin in 20 minutes.
Masters and Grand Masters - RACE 2
It is 1300 hours. The Mayan gods of the wind blow stronlgy now and the sun is shining in the zenith. The competitors look more skillful and the competition is tight.
The wind has made the waves grow and we can see waves of 4 feet. The weather conditions are perfect. In the Organization Committee there's a lot of enthusiasm; Lori Mohney, the President of the Event expresses her total satisfaction: “The Quality of the competitors is wonderful, the more experienced, the better".
We were also joined on the boat by reigning World Champion Gavin Colby. It was interesting getting Gavins perspective on the racing, especially the start. We certainly can see by listening to him why he is a World Champion. He knew several on the course, and it was fun to hear the commentary on the boat. The left side of the course was favored as they headed up to A mark. The first four boats around were very close. The talk on the boat is that it was quite an Australian contingent in the top boats. They headed down to the gates. It wasn’t long and they were back at A mark again. We had our own fun jockeying for position with the other media boats trying to get great shots of the competitors. The second rounding of A mark had Goritz from Germany in the lead with Maegli from Guatemala right behind. After the top 6 boats there was a bit of a gap to the next grouping. We were now heading to the fnish. Great finish with Maegli and his very small crew taking the bullet! Great job! We had great shots on the way in as the Masters-Grand Masters are now done sailing for the day. It is back to the beach and time for the Women and Youth to sail. The wind seems to be building as the day goes on. The site of the boats from the water coming off the beach was spectacular! It is finally a reality.
Women and Youth - RACE 1
After two regattas, Juan E. Maegli and Jose Daniel Hernandez de Guatemala are ahead. Rod and Jason Waterhouse of Australia are second in Masters by the end of the 2 regattas for today in their category. Bruce Tardew and Sarah Turnbull of Australia are ahead in the category of Grand Masters.
At almost 3 o’clock in the afternoon everybody is in the start line again. The course is a 2G and the wind, coming from the N-NE gets a little stronger. Now is time for the 18 teams of the Women category and the 34 teams in the Youth category.
The safety ships, judges, regatta officers and are doing their precise job in the middle of the clear and blue waters of the Caribbean.
When returning to the beach, is fascinating to admire the speed in which the boats are received, inspected, the change of crew and how they set the boat to do their best out there. Without a doubt, the thrill is as big as it can get. Youth Women
Women and Youth - RACE 2
The official chronometer marks 3:50 in the afternoon. The clouds start covering the sky but the three colored sails, that resemble the Mexican, sail away for another battle. Once again, the wind sustains its direction of N-NE.
On the beach, numerous visitors are nervous with expectation. The 15 knot wind now makes the catamarans fly while the waves shake the marks. The ladies and the youth sail again in an afternoon covered by low clouds.
Many centuries ago, in these same waters, the Mayan warriors sailed aboard of their ships. The new gladiators of today do the same thing, in the same arena.
Until now, in the women’s category the leaders are Belinda Zanesco and Nicky Souter from Australia. In the youth category, for the time being, France is waving his flag in the hands of Jerome Legal and Valk Delevaux.
Five o’clock in the afternoon. Everybody to the beach. For today, sea activities have come to an end. The party starts in firm land. Youth Women
